This unique, colorful bike rack is
making quite the statement outside the Transportation Building in downtown
Raleigh. The bike rack, installed in early May, was designed by students John
Willard and Miller Taylor as part of a competition sponsored by Architecture
for Humanity and the City of Raleigh.
In 2011, Architecture for Humanity - Raleigh partnered with
the City of Raleigh to organize a competition to design unique and functional
bike racks for the downtown area. This competition generated custom artistic
bike rack designs that represent the five distinct districts of downtown. The racks have since been constructed by a
local fabricator and installed around the Downtown area. The project was completely
funded, from fabrication to installation, by the generosity of local sponsors.
The Capital District winning design was a bike rack in the
shape of the State of North Carolina and a perfect choice to be installed
outside of the NCDOT Transportation Building in downtown Raleigh.
Good article! Can you please give photo credit to Oaks and Spokes, as I took that photo of my girlfriend's bike. How did you obtain it? Feel free to use it, just give credit to Oaks and Spokes. Thanks!
